The old mines here reached out under the sea - for a distance of two miles - at angles of 40 degrees.
It must have been extraordinarily difficult for the miners, working in the dark hostile environment, while hearing the waves pounding away above. All we have of their legacy today are these atmospheric buildings - used to house the great steam engines used to pump the water out of the mines and haul the underground carts up the shafts.
