The Hawtorn trees by Combestone Tor in Dartmoor.
The double rainbow looks lovely and vivid, a bright and welcoming setting for the scene. What you cannot see are the freezing storm force winds almost blowing me off my feet, and whipping the stinging hailstones into a horizontal torrent. I needed to shoot directly into the hail in order to get the rainbow – I could hardly even look where I was shooting, let alone keep the lens clean. Is a miracle I managed to come away with a shot at all!</image:caption>

Constantine Bay, Cornwall
Found some sand ripples in a large rockpool. The ripples are formed by the waves washing up and down the beach, in the same way that wind shapes sand dunes (the ripples are in effect, miniature dunes). However these small and intricate patterns are indicative of a very fine, soft sand.</image:caption>

This is Priest's Cove with Cape Cornwall towering above, and the Brisons just offshore to the left. Always liked the 'chessboard' appearance of this beach with the mixture of light and dark rocks, and found this nice spot as the waters edge with seaweed and barnacles on show.

As I arrived, the clouds where clearing off eastwards, and I honestly thought I had gone to the wrong location. However the clouds seemed to do an about turn, and came back in just as the sun was setting and really completed the shot. The waves were small and only just lapping at the rocks. I tried some shorter exposures, but I didn't quite get the right feel, so I fitted the 6 stop ND to go much longer (this exposure was 25 seconds). This really smoothed out the sea, and I felt this complemented the mood of the scene much better.</image:caption>

Sunrise from Sharpitor, looking over the Burrator Reservoir. At fist the sun was locked up behind some storm clouds - and the light reflected from those clouds produced some of the most saturated light I have yet witnessed - it was if the landscape had decided to photoshop itself, and badly at that! Hardly the ingredients for a good photo! Fortunately the Storm clouds broke, and as they moved off, there was some saner and rather more photogenic light to be had.</image:caption>

The wonderful old 12th Century chapel at Rame Head.

The forecast of clear skies proved a little inaccurate unfortunately, and the clouds started rolling in almost as soon as the sun set. Did not get to see the Milky Way thanks to the cloud cover, which also reflected a lot of light pollution from Plymouth back down - but I did have this little a little window of clarity out to the west, so setup right up close to the chapel, and waited for the clouds to roll in as I wanted to capture the colour and atmosphere they provided. Orion is peaking out, with the 'belt and sword' clearly visible above the chapel roof, with the orange glow of Betelgeuse above. But the view is dominated by the bright glow of Venus.</image:caption>

Wheal Coates mine, St Agnes. I setup the camera with the Towanroath engine house on the right of the frame, and the Milky way arching through the sky on the left. You can see the 'pan' part of the 'Plough' (sometimes called 'The big Dipper') to the right of the chimney. The top two stars point up to the North star (Polaris) just right of centre.
I shot a number of frames of the night sky, then I left the camera running while I popped down to the engine house, and lit it up using a touch. I was just about to move on, when I noticed a bank of clouds moving up from the horizon, so I had to carry on shooting while they passed overhead - with the wash of colour contrasting wonderfully with the cool tones of the night sky.</image:caption>

This is the little lighthouse at the end of Smeaton's pier at St Ives during a fantastic moon rise.
I was shooting the dusk over St Ives from the station end of town, when I noticed the moon was just rising across the bay. Grabbed the camera and ran through the busy town so I could get to this spot by the harbour so I could line the moon up with the lighthouse. There were lots of people out enjoying the summer evening, and I had pick my way through on occasion. As I reached my viewpoint, and slung the tripod and changed lens (this was taken on the 70-200mm) - "What are you looking at?"
Me: "The moon!"
"Oh WOW!"
Glad to be of service</image:caption>

The Towanroath Engine House at Wheal Coates Mine, St Agnes beneath a moody sunset.

The sun was only able to break through a tiny gap in the clouds, with not a great deal of light making it through, so I shot the old engine house from above to make the most of the warm light reflecting from the sea. I also likes the zig-zag break in the clouds above which roughly pointed down to the sunburst.</image:caption>

This is an old neolithic burial mound up on the hills overlooking the coastline at Pendeen - one of the many little ancient monuments you can find littering the countryside in Cornwall. Have not been up here for years, and with the sea rather flat, though it would make a nice change. With some fine evening light and an interesting sky, it certainly hit the photographic spot - and possibly one of the few quiet places in Cornwall during the summer holidays!</image:caption>

Bluebells are out at the old iron age hill fort at Blackbury Camp. The banking and ditch you can see here once formed the perimeter defenses. The trees grew after the fort fell into disuse.
I do enjoy historical sites like this which you can explore and enjoy without fences, ticket booths, gift shops etc. Just an interesting and atmospheric part of the landscape.</image:caption>

The water round the foreground rock here was too deep for my boots, and as I did not want to make the long walk back in wet boots, I kicked them off, rolled up the trousers and went paddling. I am happy to report that the water in the middle of December was not quite as cold as feared. However the razor sharp shale was rather less comfortable...

A glorious sunset from Plymouth Hoe in Devon. As I watched the evening sky develop, and these stripy clouds move in, I thought they evoked the stripes of Smeatons tower on the Hoe - an old lighthouse which originally stood on the Eddystone rocks offshore.

Smeaton's tower revolutionized the way lighthouses were built, and proved so sturdy it even outlasted the rock it was founded on. When a new lighthouse was built (on a different rock), Smeatons's tower as dismantled and transported to Plymouth Hoe where it has severed as a local landmark ever since.</image:caption>

This was always going to be a black and White image from the moment I saw the scene, with the engine house shot as a stark silhouette. However putting the two together, in a visually pleasing composition took a bit of work... A bit of wave action from Porthcurno in Cornwall. With some very changeable skies, it was difficult to know which location would work best - but took the chance that the clouds would move into position for Porthcurno, and for once managed to call it right with some wonderfully stormy and moody clouds above the (aptly named) Castle Peak and Treen cliffs. Setup shooting the rolling waves roaring into the cove, and yes, on this shot the wave is covering a bit of the cliffs behind - but for me this moment was the best combination of waves, movement and light.</image:caption>

I was down in West Cornwall running a very successful workshop. Following the workshop, and with the clear skies and no moon, I popped over to these stunning engine houses for a night shoot. I needed to wait till 2am for the Milky-way to be in the right position over the engine houses - but wow - what a sight! and I also managed to capture a shooting star too.</image:caption>

I'm sure all photographers know well the feeling, of arriving at a location full of enthusiasm, then scanning the sky and realizing that the shoot is going to be a lot harder than anticipated.
I thought this trip to Bantham was going to be like that, as the cloud cover which arrived suddenly, didn't look like shifting out - but a subtle glow in the sky as the sun was setting provided that little bit of interest that I was looking for.</image:caption>

A wonderful sunrise from Polperro in Cornwall.
Stunning light, but a real 'blink and you miss it' kind of morning. There was a little gap in the clouds I was watching on the drive over, so I knew I only had seconds available, and found this viewpoint just in time. Little is known about the small chapel atop Roche Roch, apart that it dates back to the 13th century, and is dedicated to St Michael (its the top of a hill after all!) - but is a striking focal point for this fascinating area near St Austell in Cornwall. The rock itself comprises just two minerals - grey quatz and black tourmaline, and has a really interesting look and texture. The information panel is quite fun "Sometime in the future, geologists will agree not only what the rock is, but how it was formed. Maybe"</image:caption>

A rather fine sunrise today from Pednvounder Beach (Porthcurno). So glad I took the chance to go on past St Micheal's Mount and on to the cliffs here despite the sky (then) looking more promising for the westward viewpoint at Marazion. The clouds moves towards the East, and for once, the plan came together.</image:caption>

The light is half from an almost full moon, and half from the final ebbs of light from the afterglow of the sunset. The first stars were appearing in the sky, and you can just make out the constellation of Orion above the main cloud.

I often list windy weather as something I look forward to - because it gets the clouds moving and creates wonderfully changeable conditions, with the sun popping in and out and all manner of interesting light.
However 40mph winds on the beach, with the sand, salt and spray from the sea blasted right at the lens was certainly a 'challenge' (as was hopping over the jelly fish washed up on the sand). Cleaning the lens between each shot was a necessity, whilst trying not to get whipped in the face by the camera strap - but the light was certainly interesting!</image:caption>

The falling tide at Polzeath left some little pools behind, which looked great reflecting the evening sky. Initially I didn't think I was going to get much from this sunset, thanks to the band of cloud across the horizon (the bane of many a coastal shoot) - but some colour managed to get around it, and some lovely feathery cloud drifted in above to balance.</image:caption>

This little stream runs out from the valley and over these rocks towards the sea, and has carved this tiny little canyon. There was some fantastic light before the sun set, however I needed to wait until the sun had gone to reduce the contrast so I could capture that wonderful detail in the seaweed and 'canyon walls' etc.</image:caption>

The mysterious stone rows at Merrivale in Dartmoor.

With some clear skies and a new moon, I wanted to get out for a night shoot before the nights start getting really cold (Was still pretty chilly up on the moors that night!) This as taken shortly after moon set. The sky was a little hazy unfortunately, especially across the horizon, but was still a beautiful night, and the milky-way was nice and visible above the standing stones. The streak to the right of the milky-way was an aeroplane - but the one to the right was indeed a meteorite.</image:caption>

Had the cliffs at Bedruthan Steps to myself, which was unexpected because a) The clouds were spectacular, b) the Thrift was spectacular and c) the light was sooooo close to being spectacular. However despite being so close to breaking out from behind clouds, the sun never quite made it.
Oh well, the wind was blowing the thrift about, which makes for some interesting movement in the foreground</image:caption>

It's an old Gunpowder works set in a stunning remote wooded valley, and been allowed to go back to nature. It's now a wildlife reserve. Photographed here in early autumn, just as the rich autumnal colours set in.

A glorious sunset from Boobys bay (real name) in Cornwall. I had nice large rock pool just about to be consumed by the rising tide. This is a shot from that second foray - as the Scotsman crossed the Forder viaduct, just outside Saltash, with the Tamar in the background. The autumn colours particularly good in 2016, and Fingle Woods, on the banks of the River Teign were especially stunning. I spent a long time setting this shot up to include the branch with the fungi in the foreground, with the camera suspended above the water, and me balancing in a tree above it, holding a branch out of the way.</image:caption>

Some choppy seas off Godrevy. The waves were throwing up some impressive spray as they crashed into the rocks - but the waves were not so big, and it was possible to get nice and close. A very foggy morning on Dartmoor, but I was in my element exploring these wonderful trees, which looked so mysterious and atmospheric in the soft diffused light. This tree in particular caught my eye, with the last of the autumn foliage clinging on. I shot this almost underneath the tree with an ultra-wide angle lens, to capture the branches fanning out.</image:caption>

Little is known about the small chapel atop Roche Roch, apart that it dates back to the 13th century, and is dedicated to St Michael (its the top of a hill after all!) - but is a striking focal point for this fascinating area near St Austell in Cornwall. I love this stretch of coastline - it really feels wild - and the derelict engine houses add to the atmosphere. The mines below once extended up to two miles under the sea!</image:caption>

Stowes Hill on Bodmin Moor (Cornwall) on a cold winters morning, with lovely dusting of icy snow. The pile of stones sitting onto of the cliffs by the quarry is the 'Cheesewring', named after the stones used to press apples during cider making - the 'cheese' being the local name for the squished apple.</image:caption>

Decided to celebrate my birthday with a dawn shoot on Dartmoor, and headed up to Great Staple Tor ready for the early morning mist to beak. Originally I was struggling for compositions round the other side of the tor, and nearly missed this spectacular inversion, with the cloud pouring down from Great Miss to Kings Tor.</image:caption>

Just another morning on Dartmoor! From Hare Tor, looking towards Gerr Tor, with Great Miss Tor in the distance.
It was great finding these wonderful patterns in the ice frozen and frosted onto the rocks!</image:caption>

<image:caption>These two horses trotted over while I was out photographing from Littaford Tor on a wonderfully misty morning. I used a telephoto lens to get in nice and close to the horses, and this also gives the effect of compressing the perspective, to pick out the sunlit hills peaking out of the mist in the background.</image:caption>

Haytor is one of Dartmoor's most prominent and recognizable landmarks.
I Liked the sky behind the main rock outcrop, and the sunlight was defused into a series of spotlights across the distant landscape behind. However getting this composition, required balancing very carefully on another (smaller rock), and I nearly lost the light by the time I had the shot setup!</image:caption>

One of those days which didn't quite go according to plan - the weather was rather stormier than expected, but with a reasonably high tide, I decided to make the most of it and so headed to Porthleven for some good stormy wave action. This was taken some time after sunset, hence the moody-blue dusk tones.</image:caption>

One of Cornwall's smallest and photogenic beaches - and on this evening I was treated to some stunning light!</image:caption>

This was a stunning sunrise over the Tamar River! I have shot misty mornings here many a time - but the 'god rays' from the sun shining through the low mist were by far the best I have seen from here.</image:caption>

A little light over Brentor, right on the western edge of Dartmoor. The
wind was up, and it was one of those days where I had to wait it out for
the storms to blow through and the clouds part - but finally I managed to
get a spotlight of light right where I wanted it, right on the church and tor
to really make the picture. Shot with a 6 stop ND filter to blur the
fast moving clouds in the sky.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ref: M2-9239

Initially missed this part of Bellever wood, even though were looking for just this sort of scene. The trees are edged by bushes and small trees at this point, and you cannot really see 'in' from the outside. On the way back, we stopped to admire the frosted edge to the wood, standing like a silver cliff over the snow. We pushed our way inside, and it was like stepping into Narnia! A stunning Hoar frost had turned the foliage a stunning silver, while the dark tree trunks stand like columns in a Cathedral.</image:caption>
